The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the death of an inmate at the Pawnee County Jail after she was found dead in her cell with a gunshot wound.
Around 3 a.m. on July 24, Pawnee Police Department officers arrested Brittany Weide DeVerges, 26, for public intoxication and possession of paraphernalia, reported KFOR.
She was then booked into the Pawnee County Jail.
Officers check her around 10:30 a.m. and decided to keep her in the detox cell rather than let her go.
At noon, DeVerges was found dead in her cell, and investigators say she had a gunshot wound to the chest, and a handgun on her stomach.
OSBI officials claim the evidence suggests DeVerges sneaked a weapon into the jail when she was arrested, and then killed herself.
She was able to shoot herself in the chest and place the gun on her stomach as she laid there and died. Apparently arresting officers searched her good enough to find a small piece of paraphernalia, but not a gun.
The investigation is still ongoing.
