A Delaware County, Indiana jail officer is on administrative leave after video surfaced of him threatening to murder a defenseless man he believes tried to break into his house.
The incident was recorded at Tillotson and Godman avenues in Muncie, Indiana around 9:30 a.m., reported Fox 59.
The jail officer, Jerry Shaner, believed a man had broken into his home when he confronted him and ordered him to get on the ground.
“You picked the wrong f**king house to try to get into,” Shaner said as he pointed his gun at him.
“Keep your f**king head down,” Shaner says as he continues to point the gun at the back of the man’s head. “You move, and your brains are going to be all over the f**king pavement, you understand me?”
Shaner continues pointing the gun at the back of the man’s head and continues threatening him while he is face down down on the ground with his hands behind his back. He told a bystander to call 911, and an officer arrives shortly afterwards.
Shaner alleges the man had tried to get into his house and his daughter’s car. There were also allegations that the man was checking car doors in the neighborhood to see if they were locked and had looked through a window on Shaner’s porch.
Muncie police said there’s no evidence the man had committed a crime. Family members said the man suffers from mental illness and was “shaken” after the encounter.
Delaware County Sheriff Ray Dudley said he became aware of the incident Tuesday night. His jail commander contacted him about it, and they placed Shaner on paid administrative leave.
An internal investigation into the incident is being conducted. A press release by the sheriff’s office said the office is, “taking this matter seriously and will gather all relevant facts before making any determination or further statements.”
