The video below was shared widely on social media today showing a Riverside, California cop pulling a woman by the hair and shoving her into the sidewalk. The cop then covers her mouth with his hand and twists her arm behind her back to cuff her.
While being roughly arrested, she yells at the cop in Spanish, “Why don’t you get the gang members! Why me? Someone who is trying to make an honest living? You are hurting me. Why do you treat us this way?”
What was this awful crime Juanita Mendez-Medrano was being arrested for? Selling flowers outside a high school graduation without a city permit! That’s it!
Local news Press Enterprise quotes Juanita recently about the June 7th event:
My case is not unique, but it is now enough. This racism has to stop. Please don’t stay quiet. Raise your voice. We have to defend our rights.
A protest of the arrest is planned for Saturday, July 22nd at noon outside the Riverside County sheriff’s Perris station. A donation page has been setup in support of “The Flower Lady” which has raised more than $3,000 for her legal defense so far.
