A former police officer in District Heights, Maryland will serve at least 11 years in jail after repeatedly sexually abusing a child.
The abuse from Douglas Parks Jr., 48, of Waldorf, Maryland, was reported to the Charles County Department of Social Services in May of 2017, reported Southern Maryland News Net.
After contacting the victim, law enforcement officials found that she had been abused by Parks many times over the course of 2 years, starting when she was only 8 years old.
A Charles County news release stated Parks showed the child pornography and engaged in sex acts with her.
The abuse occurred approximately 10 years prior to it being reported.
Parks admitted what he had done, and plead guilty in October, 2017.
During sentencing, Assistant State’s Attorney Jonathan Beattie told the judge, “Mr. Parks was supposed to be a role model for protection. The biggest, greatest betrayal is to violate trust to the extent Mr. Parks did. This is an issue the victim will be dealing with for the rest of her life. This was not an isolated incident. Mr. Parks was grooming the victim for his own selfish gratification.”
Parks was sentenced to 25 years suspended, with 11 years to serve.
